A Study On Contemporary Art Market In Korea: Focused On 2005-2009

With a rapid development of media and transportation, the globalization of art market has been one of the major trends. In addition to the increasing interests of Asian art and the growth of Asian art market, cultural interchange and understanding between Asian countries gain in importance. Korea is geographically very close to China, and its Art market started to form 30 years earlier than China. Now, Korea is the most sensitive country to the changes in Chinese art market and at the same time, is the most biggiest factor from abroad in Chinese Art Market. This paper has chosen the art market in Korea from 2005 to 2009 as the starting point for us to explore and understand the capability and the formation and development of the art market in Korea. Thus, in addition to to providing a new perspective of study method, we also strive to understand the social and economical backgrounds of the development of art market in Korea. Then, by introducing the collections in Korea, makes up for the shortage of domestic research in this area.This paper uses several approaches such as classification method, statistics, case studies, and art management studied as the base of analysis. This flexible and interdisclinary study method ensures a comprehensive and in-depth review on the subject of art market in Korea. Finally, more than just understanding the auction records and the events in Korean art market from 2005 to 2009, we would also be able to understand the construction, peculiarities and trends of art market in Korea. At the same time, this paper would also contribute to enriching domestic knowledge on the study of art market in Asia.
