The Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival of Zhang Zeduan in Song Dynasty is the masterpiece in Chinese painting history and the treasure in both China and abroad. It has also caused many researchers'speculations that why there is no record about this painting in Song official historical painting book the Xuanhe Painting Collections. This collection does not record Zhang Zeduan is because it has certain standards for its selections.This thesis researches the creating time of the Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival painting and the Hanlin(member of imperial academy) courtier status of Zhang Zeduan in the Song Dynasty painting style. According to the chinese traditional apreciation,this thesis analyzes the aesthetic taste of the Xuanhe Painting Collections from the standards of painting selections, literatual thoughts and other aesthetic idiologes. From the view of people in Song dynasty, this thesis judges the advantages and disadavantsges, historical role and value of The Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival of Zhang Zheduan. This thesis also explains why it is called the masterpiece among the paintings and compares it with the superb work painted in the splendorous imperial-court decorative painting style which is famous for the idiologe that persuits the hasty painting style, not the similar appearance and the figures with the characters of the combination of the dress in the style of Tang dynasty and the elegance of people in Jin dynasty in order that it can presents people a new recognization of The Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival of Zhang Zheduan. What's more, the thesis makes the demonstrations and speculations with the research methods such as iconology, semiology, textology, narratology, contrastion and others.For example, the combination of the spatial narratology and Chinese traditional scroll painting way of looking; the method of semiology used in the analysis of the inclince of the secularization of the cultural signs in The Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival; the method of image metaphor adopted in the interpretation about the images of The Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival to represent its political and social facts hided in this painting; the comparision and contrastion between Zhang Zeduan and his contemporaries to help people approach to the historical truth and finds out the real reason why The Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival of Zhang Zeduan is not recorded in the Xuanhe painting collections.However, that the Xuanhe painting collections does not make records of Zhang Zeduan is just like that the history does not make a note of those numeral artisan-painters who have created the Dunhuang grotto murals. Zhang Zeduan is famous for his painting The Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival which is a mastrepiece in the history of chinese painting for the creation of its art images from the commen life but above life.
