Edward Grieg was a 19th century Norwegian composer and pianist, renowned as a nationalist composer. His Piano Concerto in A minor is one of the best known piano concertos in the world. Grieg created nationally romantic and patriotic music to show his love for the nation. This thesis is divided into four chapters. Chapter one is the introduction of Edward Grieg, the music education he had received and his major works. In terms of Grieg's musical study, there are four people worth mentioning:his mother as his first piano teacher, Norwegian violinist Ole Bull who recognized his talent, Norwegian composer Rikard Nordraak, who was a good friend, and Franz Liszt who gave a helping hand when Grieg was in difficulty. Chapter two is an analysis of the musical techniques of Piano Concerto in A minor. Chapter two's discussion includes three parts. First, analyzing the difference between concerto and sonata by citing examples from difficult parts in performance; second, analyzing the rhythm of the concerto and discuss the difficult parts; three, discussing performance art by analyzing voice performance. All are based on performance experience. This thesis only focuses on Piano Concerto in A minor. It is not a comparative study of Grieg's works or contemporary works.
