Peking Opera is the quintessence of Chinese culture, and it has experienced prosperity, decline and reform. However, the Peking Opera is ignored and forgotten gradually by many Chinese. In order to promote the influence of Peking Opera and hand this Chinese's "essence" over to next generations, an experimental program termed as "Middle and Primary school teaching Peking Opera on music classes" was carried out by the Ministry of Education in Feb.2008.Based on the practical performing of "Middle and Primary school teaching Peking Opera on music class", the essay aims at studying the popularization of the Peking Opera from the aspect of music education, using the combination of quantitative research and qualitative research method. The paper takes the cases of Wuhan's five experimental schools as example to investigate and analyze how the Peking Opera is taught in primary schools and the effects of the learning by students. Our investigations show that there are many problems during the execution of the Peking Opera's popularization in primary schools. Based on the investigation results, some solutions are proposed.The introduction of the essay first gives a whole picture of why and how the research is preceded, and then summarizes the current situation of Peking Opera teaching in schools. The first chapter provides a brief summarization of the significance of Peking Opera, which includes the formation and development of Peking Opera, the cultural connotations of Peking Opera, and it's value of inherit and education. Chapter two includes the investigation part. This part offers some questionnaires and analysis of related questions to the students of the experimental schools. Besides, the Peking Opera teaching situation in the five experimental schools are analyzed and compared. According to the analysis, the problems of the teaching of Peking Opera in Wuhan's middle and primary schools are revealed. The third chapter proceeds the theory of music pedagogy, and provides some suggestions on how to expand the education of Peking Opera. The conclusion part generalizes the content of the thesis, and proposes some questions of Peking Opera teaching that need to be further investigated.
