Taking the Mulan as an example, this thesis aims to discuss the dubbing translation of Disney animated film from the perspective of communicative translation. As a popular form of mass amusements among children or young people, animated film is characterized by its edutainment. Not only does it bring a wonderful feast in seeing and hearing to children but also could influence their language, way of thinking and the formation of their value system as well. Accompanying the soaring development of the television media industry, a great many of foreign animated films especially those from the Disney movie maker are now flowing into our country steadily, which glut the eyes of Chinese children. Although animated film exert significantly on the healthy growth of children, the theoretical research into animated film translation is not in accordance with.Although up to now, there is not a theory specialize in the translation of animated cartoon films, some fundamental translation theories and studies could offer some guidance. The author thinks that communicative translation could effectively guide the translation of cartoon movies. Peter Newmark. is an English translation theorist who first time elaborate discussed the semantic translation and communicative translation. Moreover, according to Buhler's linguistic functional theory, Newmark classify the texts into three categories, namely, Expressive-function Texts, Informative-function Texts, Vocative-function Texts. The translator should adopt different strategies to different texts. Film and teleplays are similar with dramas, whose function is language appeal, belongs to the vocative-function texts. Therefore, usually it use communicative translation.Peter Newmark considers the genres of target receivers determine what strategies the translator should choice. The translator should adopt appropriate strategies to achieve a perfect communicative effect. Because the children are the main target language audience of animated films, whose speed in captions reading and literal level is not as good as adults, and some children even are half illiterate or illiterate. Therefore, higher quality dubbing translation is required for them to understand the content of the films and to accept the instructive, humorous and entertaining factors in the animated films. Meanwhile, the communicative translation theory can be applied to direct dubbing translation of animated films because of the text feature of the script—vocative texts. The application of communicative translation theory to the process and evaluation of dubbing translation, especially for a special type of films—animated films, is a relatively new field of research.Considering the status quo of the research into dubbing of animated film in the view of translation studies, the present study into the translation strategies used in the film Mulan will contribute to dubbing translation of animated film. Under the guidance of Newmark's theory of communicative translation, this thesis is going to analyze the characters and translation strategies of the dubbing translation of animated film in connection with its distinctiveness in language. As a result, the author will try to find some practical criteria for the assessment of animated films.
