Astudy On Literary Translation From The Perspective Of Function Plus Loyalty Theory

Function plus loyalty theory was put forward by German scholar Christiane Nord, which has great contributions to Functionalist Theory and breakthrough significance in translation studies. With Functionalism methodology as the theoretical basis, function plus loyalty theory has agreement with many other well-known translation theories at home and abroad, such as"faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance"of Yan Fu and three criteria of Tytler etc., which proves its scientificalness sufficiently. Function plus loyalty theory gives great enrichment to the translation skopos theory and translation act theory, which makes them more scientific and instructive; it is a correction to the radical functionalism about the relationship between the source-text author and the translator; it gets rid of the fetter of source-text sovereign.This thesis will begin with the historical background of function plus loyalty theory, expound on the definition and connotation, analyze its theoretical basis, explore its agreement between other translation theories, and then come to the conclusion about the innovation and limitation of function plus loyalty theory. Based on the narration of the definition and characteristics of literary translation, with poem and prose as the objects of research, segments of Walden and Song of an Everlasting Regret as the research texts, this thesis will make comparative analysis to the different translation versions of the research texts from function principle and loyalty principle respectively to prove that the application of function plus loyalty theory in literary translation is rational and practical.The aim of the thesis is to prove the scientific meaning and practicability of function plus loyalty theory and with the hope of explore its instructive significance for literary translation. It should be noted that function plus loyalty theory is not an absolute and everlasting rule although it has its theoretical advantage and practical value. The limitation of function plus loyalty theory desires further and deeper researches so as to abound and improve the applicability of function plus loyalty theory.
