A Report On The E-C Translation Of COVID-19 Pandemic:the Deadly Coronavirus Outbreak (Excerpts) From The Principle Of “Function Plus Loyalty”

The COVID-19 that broke out at the end of 2019 aroused human attention to the pandemic,and all mankind must master relevant knowledge of pandemic to cope with more challenges in the future.This is a report of the E-C translation of Chapter 1,2,3and 9 from COVID-19 Pandemic: The Deadly Coronavirus Outbreak,which is a medical popular science text.The four chapters highlight a wealth of professional knowledge related to COVID-19 and other pandemics,as well as the global response to pandemics.Against the social backdrop,this report has practical significance and can provide certain experience and inspiration for current pandemic prevention and control in China.Nord’s “Function plus Loyalty” principle focuses on coordinating interpersonal relationships among the translator,source text writer and target readers,and accurately reproduces the functions,language styles and stylistic features of the source text.Therefore,this report chooses the “Function plus Loyalty” principle to analyze typical translation cases,and discusses the methods and skills of E-C translation of medical popular science texts at the lexical,syntactic and discourse level respectively.Studies show that the method of free translation and techniques of transliteration and annotation,etc.are used in the translation of idioms and special medical terms.For the translation of compound sentences with semicolons,passive sentences,multiple attributive clauses,and adverbial clauses,techniques such as conversion,structure shifting,word order adjustment,sentence division and reorganization,etc.are adopted.As for the translation at discourse level,a variety of translation methods and techniques such as sentence integration,logical connectives retention and logical connectives addition are flexibly adopted to accurately reproduce the logic,semantic coherence and stylistic characteristics of the source text in the translation.For the translation of medical popular science texts,the translator needs not only to ensure that the translation is loyal to the original writer and target language readers,but also to convey the function of the source text through appropriate translation methods and techniques.
