The proposal of "Eight ills" and its use in poetry have always been important issues that can not be avoided in the study of medieval poetry, especially of the Qi and Liang Dynasties' poetry. Theorists generally consider that "Eight ills" were proposed by Shen Yue in Southern Liang, including eight ills should be avoided. There are "Ping Tou", "Shang Wei", "Feng Yao", "He Xi", "Da Yun", "Xiao Yun", "Bang Niu", "Zheng Niu". Shen Yue's works about "Eight ills" have been lost, so there're a lot of discussions about the contents of "Eight ills".Shen Yue expressed self-confidence about his rhythm theory in Song shu Xie Lingyun Zhuanlun(《宋书·谢靈连传论》)He also actively applied those theories to his practice of poetry. We believe that we could be much closer to the original of "Eight ills" by researching Shen Yue's actual creating. So, we had exhaustive survey about initials, finals and tones of Shen Yue's Five-character poems, and we also studied scholars' understandings about "Eight ills" in Wenjing Mifulun(《文镜秘府论》)We tried to find the original of "Eight ills" from all kinds of interpretations by researching "Ping Tou", "Shang Wei", "Feng Yao", "He Xi", "Da Yun", "Xiao Yun", "Bang Niu", "Zheng Niu" in Shen Yue's Five-character poems."Eight ills" made Five-character poems become the norm and played a foundation role for the metrical shape in recent poetry. We analyzed the rhyme and classical of Shen Yue's Five-character poems to search the track of recent poety's bud. We found that Shen Yue had begun the process of metrical poetry.Thesis is divided into five parts. Part I:Preface and literature review. Introduction "Eight ills" research questions, research significance, a clear research object, the selected version and research methods.Part II:Overview about rhyme in Shen Yue's works. We summarized 44 rhyme categories of Shen Yue's works and lay the foundation for an exhaustive survey about rhyme in Shen Yue's works.PartⅢ:Overview about "Eight ills" of Shen Yue's Five-character poems. We had exhaustive survey about initials, finals and tones of Shen Yue's Five-character poems, and we also studied scholars'understandings about "Eight ills" in Wenjing Mifulun(《文镜秘府论》)We defined the "Eight ills" that meet Shen Yue's actual creating.PartIV:Overview about "Four ills" of Shen Yue's verses. "Ping Tou", "Shang Wei","Feng Yao" and "He Xi" also constrained verse writing besides constraining Five-character poems. So, we had exhaustive survey about initials, finals and tones of Shen Yue's verses, and we also studied scholars' understandings about "Four ills" in Wenjing Mifulun(《文镜秘府论》)We believed that four ills' constraint about verses was not yet started in Shen Yue's period. Maybe these theories were interpretations of future generations.PartⅤ:Track of recent poety's bud in Shen Yue's Five-character poems. We analyzed the rhyme and classical of Shen Yue's Five-character poems and found that there were considerable number of legal sentences and couplets in those poems. But, there were not too many Five-character poems into the law. So, Shen Yue had begun the process of metrical poetry, but had not consciously begun the creation of recent poetries.By the exhaustive survey of Shen Yue's Five-character poems and verses, we defined the "Eight ills" that meet Shen Yue's actual creating and found that Shen Yue had begun the process of metrical poetry.
