This paper is aimed to make a research on the vocabulary learning strategies of intermediate and above level Chinese language learners. We mainly focused on three topics:firstly, we classify the vocabulary learning strategies into inputting strategy, encoding strategy, storing strategy and retrieving strategy with the standard of vocabulary learning cognitive process. Then based on this theory, we designed questionnaire. We applied quantitative research on the subject whose mother languages are English, in order to find, out the differences on strategies application and strategies applying situation of different Chinese level learners. On the basis of quantitative research, we continued to apply the qualitative approach on individuals to investigate the further reasons. Finally we discussed the vocabulary teaching methods.We found that the learners used more inputting strategies and less storing strategies. The application of inputting strategy, encoding strategy and retrieving strategj/showed significant differences due to different Chinese level. The higher level Chinese learners used more material analysis and self-management strategy during the inputting process, and used more strategies of restructuring, guessing, inferring, and target vocabulary during the encoding process. They more frequently used self-planning strategy during storing process, and more self-encouragement and selective attention strategy during the retrieving process.Moreover, we raised some suggestions of teaching vocabulary on the basis of previous conclusion, that is. the teacher mav teach the vocabulary selectively based on the students language level, learning purpose:and aiffereori".'ocabuiar'types.
