A Study On Negative Life Events Of Junior High School Students And Its Influence On Self-esteem

In order to investigate the frequency and stress intensity conditions of negative life events which were suffered by junior high school students in Shanghai, and the impact of these negative life events on students self-esteem, this study used Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale and Adolescent Self-Rating Life Events CheckList to examine 180 students" present situation of negative life events and their self-esteem levels. These students including preparatory class students and grade seven to grade nine students were selected from two middle schools of Hongkou District in Shanghai. One way analysis of variance and multivariate analysis of variance were used to test present situation of negative life events the students were suffering and the influence on their self-esteem. The results are as following:(1) Interpersonal relationship and study stress are the two main stress sources suffered by the junior high school students in Shanghai. The primary influences on self-esteem are from the problems of interpersonal relationship and health issues in adaptation. (2) The preparatory class students stress intensity of negative life events caused by transition between schools is higher than the students of grade seven and grade eight. (3) The stress intensity of negative life events felt by immigrated junior high school students is higher than the local junior high school students. The self-esteem scores of immigrated junior high school students are also higher than the local junior high school students. But neither have statistically significant difference. (4) The negative life events scores of students can effectively predict their self-esteem levels. (5) In different junior high school students groups, the predominant negative life events factor influencing their self-esteem is different. To immigrated junior high school student group, boy student of junior high school group and student of grade seven group, the problem form health issues in adaption are the main factor of their self-esteem. To the local junior high school student group, girl student of junior high school group and student of grade six group, interpersonal relationship problems is the greatest predictor of their self-esteem. To the preparatory class student group, the study stress is the most influential factor of their self-esteem.
