This study defines the concept of upward comparison from the upward socialcomparison of social comparison and studies the relationship between life-satisfactionand self-esteem which are the subordinate concepts of upward comparison andsubjective well-being. Researches suggest that uplink comparison information of socialcomparison would lead to the decrease of self-evaluation (Morse&Gergen,1970;Brown et al.,1992). Some studies manifest that social comparison is an important factorto affect subjective well-being. Based on the theories of social comparison, this studyused the questionnaire method and took sample of969junior high school students whoare from junior high schools (three-year) of Heilongjiang and Jilin province. Thenanalyzed and examined the effect of upward comparison and self-esteem onlife-satisfaction as well as their correlation. The results showed as follows.1. The psychological questionnaire of junior high school students which has highreliability and validity, would be used as a psychological comparisons measuring tool ofjunior high school student.2. There was gender difference on family satisfaction, free satisfaction, schoolsatisfaction and environment satisfaction in life satisfaction. There was grade differenceon academic satisfaction, free satisfaction, school satisfaction and environmentsatisfaction.3. There was gender difference on vanity dimensions of upward comparison. Therewas no difference on upward comparison between only-child and non only-child.4. There was grade difference on self-esteem, the level of the self-esteem of grade1is significant lower than grade2and3.5. There was significant correlation among upward comparison, self-esteem andlife-satisfaction.6. Self-esteem and life-satisfaction were predicted significantly by upwardcomparison. Life-satisfaction was predicted significantly by self-esteem.7. Self-esteem mediated the relation partially between upward comparison andlife-satisfaction.
