Clay is the main component in ceramic art. The artist needs to change the characteristic of the clay to fit criteria that helps to finish his work. Clay has a lot of characteristics and properties. This thesis studied clay properties that affect the artist who work with the clay. These characteristics are the porosity, plasticity, firing temperature and shrinkage. We did not study the characteristics that have no effects in art work like thermal or electrical connectivity. After studying these characteristics, impure materials have been added to the clay to study the effect of such material on the output. Our contribution will be in a survey between four kinds of clays from two countries "China and Iraq" and their sensitivity to impure or plastic materials. The results of this study have shown that, each clay has its own ways to react with impure materials. The study also shows that the type and the origin of the impure materials can affect the output. The survey in this thesis can be used by any arts to mix the perfect quantities to change whatever he wants to get his work. This work has tried to show the best cases for each characteristic and the trade of with others. The artist needs to reduce the firing temperature, the mixture of such a characteristic can be seen in the result chapter but it can also affect other characteristics like increasing the shrinkage property. Our contribution has shown the following...
