Tourism is a booming industry which has given rise to the needs of well-translated public signs in scenic spots. The main functions of public signs in scenic spots are: providing adequate information or arouse travelers'interest. However, many existing translations are not satisfactory. Various problems exist. C-E translation of public signs in scenic spots is very important for national tourism. The subject is worth a systematic study.Looking upon C-E translation of public signs in terms of Skopostheorie helps to solve a lot of problems in translation practice. Functional approach fits better in guiding translation practice in this field. According to this theory, the translation process is determined by the potential function or purpose of the target text. (Vermeer, 1978) Furthermore,"it is the reception that defines the function of the text, so it is safe to say that the reception of the target text defines the Skopos of the translation".(Nord, 2001:17) Any translation form can be regarded an action. Any action has an aim or a purpose. It is also the guiding principle of functionalist translation and determines the translation strategies. The addressee is one of the most important factors determining the translation purpose. The intended receiver in the target culture is the addressee. They have their own background cultural knowledge, expectations and communicative needs. Therefore,in the translation of signs we must first make clear their functions and intended addressees.Based on Skopostheorie, the thesis divides the problems in the public sign translation into three types. That is linguistic translation problems, cultural translation problems and pragmatic problems. By way of rich examples collected in Hangzhou and an empirical study, this thesis gives a detailed analysis of the features of public signs in scenic spots, and figures out the practical strategies and methods applicable to the translation of this special genre...
