With the continuous development of China’s tourism industry, red tourism, orheritage tourism(a subset of tourism in the People’s Republic of China in whichChinese people visit locations with historical significance to Chinese Communismrekindle the long-lost sense of class struggle and proletarian principles)has become anew growth point and been increasingly active in tourism market.More and moreChinese and foreign tourists participate in the red tourism. In order to help the touriststo better understand Chinese revolutionary history and achieve the real significance ofthe red tourism, carrying out the research on the Chinese-English signs is quiteimportant and necessary.Besides, since Nanning has become the host city of China-ASEAN Expo,China-ASEAN Free Trade Area has been established, and the trade exchange betweenGuangxi and the overseas countries is also in a growing trend, which drives the rapiddevelopment of Beibu Bay cities and deeply influences Baise to make closer contactwith the outside world. Finally, Baise opens up its own red tourism path. According tothe statistics, the total number of tourists participated in red tourism of Baise has overone million each year.Although the less commonly taught foreign languages hold theiroutstanding parts in Guangxi, English has always been the most widely used languagein the world, especially in political and military contact, the spread of culture andeducation as well as science or technology exchange. As a mirror of the city, signs are closely related to the image of a city. This thesistakes the red tourism resources of Baise as the subject of research, not only becausethere are most distinctive red tourist stops in Guangxi, and signs in its scenic spots aretypical and iconic, but also because the research meets the international need oftourism development in Baise. In the process of collecting materials, there is no difficulty in finding countless translation errors, such as misspelling words, grammarerror or Chinglish, which are worth drawing the public’s attention to the translation ofsigns in red tourist attractions. In analysing these errors,a strong theoretical support should be applied in theChinese-English signs study.Skopostheorie focuses on the aim or purpose oftranslation.Through a long period of development, the functionalist translation theoryemerged in the1970s, then shaping its own unique theory system. The Skopostheoriepointed out by Vermeer is the soul of functionalist translation theory, which includesthe three translation principles:the skopos rule, the coherence rule and the fidelity rule.Among these translation rules, the skopos rule always comes first.Under the directionof Skopotheorie, the translation skills and quality are enriched and improved. In termsof the signs in red scenic spots, for its special requirements, three translationprinciples of Skopostheorie also have a profound guidance in solving these translationproblems.
