Study Of Shenbao Monthly From 1932-1935

Shenbao Monthly was one of the"Three Magazines in Shanghai"in 1930s and also a representative publication of Shenbao newspaper in journal publishing. It was published in 1932 and issued more than ten years before and after. Four volumes were issued in the period of the first monthly, edited by well-known journalist Yu Songhua. At first, it was published as a commemorative publication for the sixtieth anniversary of Shenbao, but with the growing influence, it soon became a large-scale comprehensive academic journal issued independently.Louis Cha had evaluated Shenbao and The Eastern Miscellany that they were"apparently the two publications which were the weightiest, and most valued by academics". But for a long time, the concern of academia on this publication is fairly little and most belongs to relative research. Its historical position and influence have not been evaluated objectively and it is lack of overall study from the professional perspective of journalism.This thesis takes the impact of Editor Yu Songhua to the publication style as cutting point, and systematically sorts out Shenbao Monthly from 1932-1935 through literature analysis, statistical analysis and other methods based on the text and combined with historical data. It tries to reevaluate the academic value of this news magazine in the history of journalism through analyzing and studying its content and edit features in order to complement and enrich the news practice and ideas of Yu Songhua and provide some new basis for investigation of the spreading function which has an influence to society and the responsibility of Republican journals.The thesis is composed by four parts. The first chapter elaborates the publisher and founding background of Shenbao Monthly, introduces and summarizes the development and advantages of Shenbao newspaper in journal publishing industry and finally raises the founding reasons of this journal from the measures of Shi Liangcai's second reform.The second chapter describes the Editor Yu Songhua's work in presiding over Shenbao Monthly. The narrative of early experiences reflects the development of his news editor thought which not only accumulates experience for his later editing but also makes the successful issue of the journal become the pinnacle of his career.The third chapter is the focus of the thesis which analyzes the features of the publication's content from the perspective of personal style of Yu Songhua. The first step for the journal toward success is to conduct research on the first issue which helps deepen the understanding of founding purpose and grasp the overall style. Fair and open attitude, free and simple construction tradition and positive and advanced cultural spreading are the main reflections of Yu Songhua's editing thought in the content of the publication. The analysis shows the efforts done by the journal in guiding and affecting public opinion.The fourth chapter is the classified elaboration of the other editing features of the publication. Founding purpose is the soul of a publication. The internal reaction between the publication's content and purpose can be found through the analysis of the latter. The type of writer group is also a true reflection to the publication positioning, and the analysis of editing principle is an important supplement to Yu Songhua's editing thought.
