Verb reduplication is one of the important contents in Chinese grammar study.This thesis is based on the research of verb reduplication,chose some representative works in different periods of modern Chinese and the verbs reduplication in them are researched in an all-round way.Combining the synchronic and diachronic method,we strived to be more comprehensive to show reduplication of the development and evolution.Firstly,the study on grammatical forms of the verbs reduplication in modern Chinese.We gave a more detailed study on grammatical forms of the verbs reduplication,and also tried to make a whole research on the development of the verbs reduplication.We divided the verbs into two categories:one-syllable verb reduplication and two-syllable verbs reduplication,counted up the number of different types of reduplication,and summarized the development and evolution of overlapping features of the verb.Secondly,the conditions of verb reduplication.According to the summarized verbs,we generalized the basic conditions of overlapping verbs: most of the verbs being used in verb reduplication are the autonomy of action verbs,and these actions can be sustained or repeated.In addition, we made an explanation to the semantics of the verb overlapping conditions and contextual constraints.Third,the verb reduplication grammatical meaning,which is an important part of the verb overlapping study.Combining the existing research results in grammatical meaning of the verb reduplication,we make a further explanation to the verb reduplication grammatical meaning in modern Chinese.Fourth,the verb reduplication grammatical functions.We discussed in three aspects:the syntactic component as which the verb reduplication can act;the patterns to which the verb reduplication can apply;the additional ingredients which are before or after the the verb reduplication.Finally,the verb reduplication expressing function.According to the context and grammatical markers, we divided the verb expressing actions into two categories:"what have been"and"what will be".The verb reduplication expressing"what have been"generally appeard in the narrative sentence,and the verb reduplication expressing"what will be"more commonly appeared in the imperative.
