A Study Of The Standardization Of Chinese-English Translation Of Signs In Henan Tourists Sites

Signs are words shown to the public in public places and have special communicative function. Signs are not only special tools for communication, but also unique cultural phenomenon. They boost cultural communication and economic prosperity and regulate people's thought and behavior.The standardization of the translation of signs is one of the prerequisites for China to join the great tide of economic globalization. The Chinese-English translation of signs is one of the important topics in current study of applied translation and a weak link in the functional concept of translation at home as well.There are many problems in the Chinese-English translation of signs in tourist sites in China, which affect not only the communicative function of signs but also the international image and the international status of China. They also hinder the development of the tourism industry of China.The Chinese-English translation of signs in tourist sites should be target- language-oriented and target-culture-oriented. Combined translation study with language function, the functional concept of translation lays emphasis on the translation purpose and the function of the text, so it has great theoretical value in analyzing the Chinese-English translation of signs in tourist sites. Based on the functional concepts of translation of some scholars, such as Nida, Reiss, Nord and Newmark, the directive function of the functional concepts of translation on the standardization of Chinese-English translation of signs in tourist sites is analyzed in this thesis.In this thesis an extensive and intensive research is made in the major tourist sites in Henan Province and first-hand materials are collected. From the perspective of the function of signs in tourist sites, the current situation of the translation of signs in Henan Province is studied in depth. Analysis is made according to the existing problems. This thesis is aimed at finding out different problems in translation, discussing the causes of the problems, analyzing the directive function of the functional concept of translation on the translation of signs, pointing out the notes for the translator and adoptable strategies and methods and proposing some suggestions on the standardization of the translation of signs.In this thesis, signs in tourist sites are classified according to their functions and the existing problems are analyzed comprehensively. Then the existing problems are classified to several kinds and solutions are pointed out. Finally the adoptable methods in translation are discussed.Some main points for the standardization of the translation are pointed out in this research: intercultural awareness should be kept in mind; pay attention to the reader's response; analyze the context and choose proper translation skills and use simple words and correspond with the international standards. Moreover, suggestions for the standardization of the translation of signs are proposed from the perspectives of relevant government departments and the quality of translators. Effective shortcut is expected to find to avoid the continuous appearance of similar mistakes while mistakes are found and corrected.
