Ji Kang's Music Embodies no Emotions is the first book on music theory in our country; it not only contains abundant philosophical thoughts but also provides enlightenment for music education. This book involves two concepts of musical ontology: one is musical perceptual ontology—the essential stipulation of concrete music in real life , that is the music we are listening to or talking about; another is musical rational ontology—the consciousness in philosophy, or spirit of art. From Ji Kang's point of view, music doesn't reflect people's thoughts, feelings and social tendency, and musical ontology is not emotion but the natural sum of sounds unrelated with present politics and people's feelings. He is the first one to state the concept of"music embodies no emotions", which means that music is the objective sound while dirge is the feeling after people are touched, and there is no causality between these two. There is no division of obscenity and decency about music itself, these so-called"decent music"or"obscene music"is just the name people give to music, not the essence of music. Obscenity and decency lies in people's mind, it is the inner spirit of man. The functions of music focus on"cultivating spirit and releasing feelings". Music is the favorite of man's"lust", and it can adjust man's lust."Musical sound is based on harmony and peace", only the placid musical sound can touch people, therefore, music reflects the spirit of"placidness". And there is a correspondent relationship between music and emotion.Ji Kang states that music is the best way to transform social traditions and make a harmonious society. He stresses that the influence brought about by music aesthetics education doesn't based on inculcation and discipline but accepting willingly. Thus, this book's enlightenment for music education revealed are as follows: firstly, the purpose of music education: being in accordance with nature, and perfecting individual personality(making music full of humanity, making music of everyone); secondly, the content of music education: surpassing the traditional content, combining"heteronomy"with"self-discipline"(reflecting on the content of music education, combining"heteronomy"with"self-discipline"); thirdly, the methods of education, making education return to nature and life, stimulating individual potential(returning to daily life, changing and influencing unobtrusively and imperceptibly, teaching in joy).
