Feiming's novel is famous for its aesthetics. Reading his novels make you feel like reading poem. Bridge is his representative work. Picturesque scenery, poetic language, kind human personality and the profound Buddhism thinking, all these make you into the situation in the book, far from the vulgar while entering into a world of pastoral landscape, serene, pure and nice. In the Buddhism thinking of virtuous human and surrealism, your soul can be purified and your body can be cleared up.There is no doubt about the aesthetics of Bridge. When you taste the aesthetics, a sense of slight sorrow is in it."Sad"is mystery veil deliberately covered in the novel Bridge by Feiming, which make the novel more like the reserve of oriental aesthetics and the world-weariness of the western one. Moreover, academic field has done much research on the aesthetics of Bridge. However, the research on"sad"is far from satisfaction. This thesis will discuss about the other kind of aesthetics–sad, and gives detailed explanation on the sad aesthetics in bridge, aiming at unveil the reserve and the profound aesthetics hidden under obscurity.This thesis is divided into four parts: the first part is to discuss how Feiming makes the picturesque scene cover the sense of"sad", from light, shadow and color; the second part is to explain how Feiming make the characters in the book have the sense of sorrow, from emotional perspective; for the third part it analyzes how to transform aesthetics and sadness by imagery and word choice under the situation of poetic language. The last part is a detail description of the essence of beauty and sadness, with Zen-Buddhism ideas. In general, the first two parts display the scene and people are more beautiful because of sadness, by intensive reading of the story; and in the last two parts, through the analysis of technique method used in this novel and its essential thought, explain how sadness and beauty get harmonious in Bridge. The fusion of sadness and beauty made this novel out of ordinary and seems more refined.
