| China has such a vast territory and population that, with the expansion of university enrolment, more and more students of every corner of our country with different education backgrounds, are entering university campus. It seems that traditional college English teaching style does not proved to be sufficient to cater for the individual needs of students of different levels in the new era. Responding to the situation, the Ministry of Education decreed the Requirements for College English Course in 2007, urging to construct individual, scientific and systematic college English teaching syllables according to respective conditions. Higher institutions of China have been probing fruitfully and have carried out innovations in these years, with college English grouping teaching (CEGT) taken as one of the common forms. According to principles of CEGT, freshmen are grouped into different classes to attend their college English course, based on their performance in college entrance examination of English subject or in an English placement test at the beginning of the term.However, what is the effect of CEGT? Compared with the traditional mixed-level teaching style, which one is better for students'English learning? Should CEGT be implemented further or not? Language program evaluation is very responsible for answering such series of questions and offering suggestions on how to improve the program. The main purpose of language program evaluation is to make sound decisions that will improve second language teaching and enhance second language learning. Such decisions require the premise of careful collection of relevant information and thoughtful interpretation of the information.Based on an integrated review of theoretical model of language program evaluation abroad, this thesis makes a summary and develops an adapted evaluation model. Under the guidance of this model, a research has been carried out to evaluate the grouping college English teaching innovation at a technological university (Liren College of Yanshan University) of China. It employs the combination of both quantitative and qualitative data gathering with the methods of questionnaire, interview, class observation and test. The data are analyzed with the help of SPSS 16.0.The result of the research shows that, compared with the traditional mixed-level teaching style, CEGT is better in improving students'English proficiency. This teaching program is better received by both students and teachers, and is a good practice of teaching reform, which should be implemented further in the future. However, there are still some shortcomings appeared in the implementation process. Finally, the thesis also offers suggestions on improving CEGT program. |
