This thesis is an attempt to study Li Taifen's academic activities and academic ideology in the time-background, hoping to give him an objective and fair position, and can have efficacy for the academics during period of the Republic of China such as"you may know by a handful the whole sack".This paper consists of six parts except the introduction.The introduction discusses mainly the background and significance of selecting the topic, the studying situation, and the means of the paper when writing.The first part discusses the social and academic background about Li Taifen's writings. It also combs Li Taifen's life experiences and academic road. After the First Opium War, the national crisis and the large-scale influx of western culture changed the thought of the traditional intellectual and academic pattern. The expressions were that the textology languished and the administer affairs was rising. Besides, the imperial civil examination system reformed and abolished, the new-style education expended (including the new-type schools, the establishment of curriculum and the change of subject classification, the transition of the textbook content, etc.). The change that the thought of traditional scholars made the academic mixed the old and new smells. And the new smells more than the old. Li Taifen's academic thought were inevitably affected by the branding of the ages.The second part suggests Li Taifen's main history thought in the light of historical ontology, historical methodology and historian, and then discusses the origin of Li Taifen's history thought. His history thought not only influenced by the traditional historians such as Liu Zhiji, Zhang Xuecheng, but also influenced by west history thought including evolutionary history viewpoint, Robinson new history, Ranke history, Materialist Historical View etc.The third part refines Li Taifen's local chronicles thought from three aspects of its nature, content and stylistic rules and layout, and gives evaluation to his local chronicles thought. Li Taifen was one of the most famous scholars of local chronicles during the time of the Republic of China. He advocated that the nature of local chronicles is belonging to history, the content should be"add contents from three aspects", the stylistic rules and layout should to reflect the tendency of the time and scientificalness. Though his chorographic ideas are original, there is also discrepancy between theory and practice. The forth part analyzes act of confusion classics through the study of Li Taifen's masterpiece--- New Text Book is false,and illuminates Li Taifen don't have confusion ideas. He identified the idea of "the six confusion classics are history". He only taken The Book of History as the chorographic materials, and this actually showed the marginalization of confusion and the centralization of history during modern times.The fifth part refines Li Taifen's understandings of Taoist Theory: Lao Zi and Zhuang Zi were objective idealists, who actively went into the secularity, not out of the secularity. Taoism is progressive, but also reactionary. On this basis, this part summarizes the characteristics of Li Taifen's study on Lao Zhuang: adopting the views and methods of Marxism, reflection the requirements of the times and the society.The sixth part is the conclusion part. It summarizes Li Taifen's academic characteristics, academic influence and academic status. And then takes Li Taifen as the perspectives to discuss the academic characteristics of the Republic of China. The most academic characteristic of Li Taifen was broad but not refined. For the absorption of Western thought, he was close to He Bingsong. Due to no school friends, even took long time in politics, his academic influence and position was not as good as He Bingsong. From the case of Li Taifen, we can see that academic characteristics of the Republic of China have the features of China-Western old and new smells, theory overtopped practice.
