Since the publication of Edward Morgan Forster抯 A Passage to Jndia in l9~4 the diversir~?of its themes has always been the focus of critics---?it has been considered to be a book of political conflicts, a book of Eastern nwsteries. a book of cultural differences, and a book of human relationships. The present fr~sis is a systematic study of the subtle USC of symbolism in the novel. Thus :ificr a short. introduction to the author, the novel, and the term of symbolism symbolic meaning of the title, the characters, the setting, the details, and most important of all., the Marabar Caves is interpreted respectively. Through the detailed interpretation of Forster抯 use of symbolism?first individually and then as an organic whole?the thesis comes to the conclusion that it is the application of symbolism that makes the theme richer and the book more meaningful.
