E. M. Forster, the famous British novelist in the 20th century, is a typical humanist. The contents of his novels are reflections of humanism in the 20th century. The writer is a master in describing the delicate relations between people. His style is humorous and ironic. His language is elegant and polished. Symbolism is one of his favorite writing techniques. As to Forster's novels, most critics are concerned with the themes. This thesis is a systematic study of the subtle use of symbolism in Howards End. After a comprehensive introduction to the author, the novel and symbolism, symbolic meaning of Howards End, the Wilcox family and the Schlegel family, the hay and hayfever are interpreted respectively. But for the writer's skillful usage of symbolism from theme to details, Howards End could merely have been a novel of manners instead of an influential masterpiece of E. M. Forster. Through the detailed interpretation of the use of symbolism in Howards End, the thesis comes to the conclusion that the adoption of the symbols enables the words to surpass their verbal meanings, making the theme richer and the novel more meaningful. The novel is accordingly endowed with greater historical significance and artistic value.
