Natsumesousaki, as a cultural individual, lives in the period that Japa nesesociety is drawn into the conflicting between traditional and modern culture. His two year's study experience in Britain makes him observe and learn from t he modern western culture and drives him to be converted to the tradition; however, this conversion gives more expressions to the criticism and introspection up on the tradition.
