This thesis is a corpus-based study on words denoting wind in MME. Much effort is made to trace the origins and developments of wind-words and their word-formation. The meanings of wind-words are explicated in detail and the nuances of wind words' meanings are compared and differentiated. The frequencies of wind words in MME, NEC, MEE, MTE, T4, LOBA, and BROWNA are compared and analyzed. The statistical results by using SNOBOL4 and the chi-square test of SPSS show that MME employs words denoting wind more frequently than the other corpora. MME uses more technical wind terms and the technical meanings of semi-technical wind words than their non-technical meanings. Wind and storm have the highest frequencies in MME. The thesis will be of help for teachers and students of maritime institutions and personnel devoted or related to marine meteorology to understand, use and differentiate English words denoting wind systematically and correctly.
