From the following three aspects, the paper makes a comparative study of two novels, sharing chess as the intermediary .One is the Story of Playing Chess by Austria writer Stefan Zweig, and the other the Chinese chess King by Chinese writer A Cheng.1, Spiritual pursuit and symbolism .The two authors, choosing chess as their subject matter, express their spiritual pursuit, that is, opposition against darkness and ignorance, against autocracy and war, longing and admiration for future, civilization, freedom and thought.2, Psychological analysis and Buddhism. Stefan Zweig, by the means of psychological analysis, portrays the characters, describes the important historical background, and expresses his feeling and volition. On the contrary, A Cheng, on the basis of Chinese tradition of doctrine and Buddhism, depicts the era and characters and emphasizes the ancient Chinese civilization with tint of Buddhism.3, Humanitarianism ideal and tragic flavor. The western culture stresses conflict between man and nature; the Chinese culture attaches great importance to harmony and communication between the two sides. It is the chess in both novels that mirrors the different history and different culture. Without dramatic conflict, the whole story develops in a simple but elastic way to expose its theme. From the above, a conclusion can be drawn that many of the authors, abroad and at home, ancient and present, no matter how great the cultural difference is, may share the similarity of choosing the same subject matter to deal with the same theme with the purpose of expressing their viewpoints toward society and life.
