The Translation Of Simile And Metaphor

Researches have been done on translation of simile/metaphor in translation studies while most of them are limited to the translation methods. Linguists have studied simile/metaphor within the framework of the language system, but their findings are seldom introduced into the translation field or applied to the simile/metaphor translation. In order to make the simile/metaphor translation more scientifically instructed, this thesis aims to apply some theoretic findings to simile/metaphor translation practice.On the basis of the discussion of the conceptions and features of simile and metaphor, the thesis gives a survey of the similarities and differences in the two languages. Then it proceeds to analyze the two main factors effecting simile/metaphor translation - language and culture. After these steps, the thesis emphasizes some considerations translators should pay attention to in simile/metaphor translation, and tries to comment on the common methods used in translation of simile/metaphor, with the view that simile/metaphor translation methods vary with the context while each of them may be put to use one way or another in the exchange of different ideas and cultures. The translators' task is to choose the proper methods for the reproduction of the source text and success of cultural exchange.
