Hemingway is now recognized as the most important and influential American novelist of the twentieth century. In the past few decades, experts and scholars at home and abroad have shown great interest in the legendary writer, and they have made researches on the writer and his works comprehensively, deeply and from many angles. With the increasing intensification of the current environmental crisis, and mankind's anxiety over his living surroundings,"green revolution" has swept across the whole world. Green literature,i.e. ecological literature has sprung up,and become a noticeable new "star" in the literary garden at the turn of the century. Literature is a branch of the humanities. It can rectify the souls and concepts of the people and appeal to people to create more reasonable space for nature,to maintain balance between modern man and nature, and therefore to realize a high degree of harmony and unification between the natural and the social environments. Under such circumstances, ecocriticism comes into being. Ecocriticism, focusing on environmental protection, with ecological consciousness raising as its most important task,is the study of the relationship between literature and the natural environment. In the past few years, critical circles abroad have started to study the relationship between Hemingway and the natural world, whereas few people in China have ever touched this field. Starting from Hemingway's life and the education on nature he received at home and school in his childhood, selecting some representative works in his early, middle and late creating periods respectively, the author is making a tentative analysis of Hemingway's perspective on nature,in the hope of casting a brick to attract jade and consulting colleagues and experts.Psychologically speaking, the early experience in one's childhood exerts significant influence upon the formation of one's personality. To a writer or artist, early experience is more important and it can influence his creative ideas, aesthetic interests, writing style ,etc.. Hemingway's mother's early education about nature ,his father's outdoor activities, the Agassiz Club, the hunter-naturalist tradition all had influenced Hemingway. He was irrevocably committed to nature, and formed his personality of loving nature and advocating nature. He loved such activities as hunting, fishing, swimming, skiing which are close to nature and he kept all these hobbies all his life.Taking a broad view of Hemingway's residences,Oak Park in Illinois, the SummerCottage near Walloon Lake, the Key West with pleasant climate and beautiful landscape, the Lookout Farm with flowers vying with each other in beauty and flourishing forest,Sun Valley with colorful wild flowers and clear blue lake,Ketchum which is located at the foot of a hill and beside a stream, and the places he had been to-Illinois tall grass prairie,Michigan hemlock and white pine forests,Spain,East Africa,Bimini,Cuba, the Rocky Mountains of the American West,we can easily find that all these places are beautiful and close to nature. Nature can be found everywhere in Hemingway's works. The lush green forests, the incessantly rolling on rivers, the stormy blue sea,the verdant and exuberant green hills provide Hemingway with inexhaustible sources of literary creation. The big two-hearted river, the snows of Kilimanjaro, the green hills of Africa, the virgin forest in /he Last Good Country, the blue sea in The Old Man and the Sea all impressed us deeply. Nature described by Hemingway is the source of life. Life is field, eagle, hill, valley, river, forest and so on. So,Hemingway is a writer who loved nature and showed concern for nature and nature is one of his major themes.Hemingway's writing career can be divided into early, middle and late stages. From the first day of his writing,Hemingway cares much about nature. In the three periods,Hemingway's nature outlook experiences the process of formation, development and maturity. His attitude towards nature develops from loving and appreciating nature to caring about and sympathizing with natu...
