Su Shu Kan Wu,a book aiming to normalize and correct the Chinese characters , is of great value in the history of Chinese character . Unfortunately little attention has been given to this book .An overall introduction and evalution of this book will be presented in terms of five aspects in this thesis .Part 1 introduces the author's life and study. The author's intelligence and strictness in scientific studies has laid a solid foundation for the writing of this book.Part 2 focuses on the formation and the purpose of this book. With the development of social economy and the prevalence of popular literature as well as the spread of popular form of characters, many classical books become changed beyond recognition , which has negative effects on the study of ancient books . Jiao Hong wrote the book in order to help scholar study the ancient books. With Jiao Hong's intelligence and wisdom, being the basis of the writing of this book ,the other necessary conditions includes the effect of study style at that time ,the development of printing industry and the achievements of the previous linguistics research .Part 3 presents a detailed description of the book's stylistic rules and layout. Being abundant in content ,this book takes different stylistic rules and layout corresponding to the content .Introduction is given according to the books order for the cohvenience of writing .Part 4 covers the study of the characters pattern ,including two sections. Section 1 is the study of standardized form of Chinese characters.Comparing these characters with the standardized form of Chinese characters in Gan Lu Zi Shu and those Chinese characters in the form of Modern General Chinese characters, the author finds that theform of Chinese characters has a strong stability . Section 2 is the study of popular form of characters. Having given a classified study on the 846 Chinese characters from volum 1 to volum 4 in this book, the author draws a conclusion that the formation of Chinese characters changes gradually .with the popular form of characters become the standardized form of characters.Part 5 discusses the other linguistic questions involved in this book .The discussion is carried out in terms of the follows three aspects :the character , the phonology andthe gloss.Part 6 points out the value and the deficiency of this book .This book is of particular significance in the study of Chinese characters. For example,it takes a correct attitude towards the regular and popular characters instead of having blind faith in the predecessors; it keeps some ancient culture materials and the original pronuncation and meaning of some Chinese characters;it collects many ancient books and odd words.Due to the time and space limitation as well as the limitation of materials , in this book there is still some deficiency such as Jiao Hong's conversative thought in explanation on some Chinese character and some wrong explanation.
