The literators' travels in traditional Chinese society are not only an important subject in social history study, but also an inseparable part of tourism culture study. Taking the literators' travels in southwest-China in Ming Dynasty for research subject, this thesis analyses the historical background and types of literators' travels in these areas, and attempts to probe into their activities and characteristics, as well as its far-reaching influence. Afterwards, this thesis puts forward some ideas on utilizing the literators' travels to develop the modem tourism culture.The thesis is composed of three parts: preface, body and conclusion.In preface, the author deals with the significance of studying ancient Chinese literators' travels briefly with a retrospect of relevant study in the academic circles at present, and then calls on the strengthening of the research of the literators' travels in southwest-China regions in Ming Dynasty.The body firstly introduces the historical background and have a general survey of tourism in the whole country, especially that in southwest-China regions in the Ming Dynasty. Secondly, it sorts out several types among the literators' travels in southwest-China in the Ming Dynasty: traveling for government service, associate tours, academic tours, hiking, and scientific investigation tours etc. Furthermore, this thesis examines closely the literators' preparations, their psychologies and practices before their traveling, their activities and characteristics in traveling, and the accounts and reflections after traveling. Based on the analyses above, the thesis points out the various influences these tourist activity exerted upon tourists and social tourism.On the basis of above-mentioned researches, the author believes that the study of traditional Chinese literators' travels can shed much light on the analyzing the modern tourists favor, the development of beauty spots, the exploitation of tourism resources, and promotion of the tourism industry, and consequently promote the tourist culture.
