LangUage, seen as a social phenomenon and a tyPe of meaningfulinteraCtion among individuals in a social conteXt, is considered to bemore than lekical, gr8mmatical or phonological systems and smictures.As a result, the foreign trade langUage, derived from the internationalbusiness worId, is a social phenomenon and has its own lingUisticcharacteristics.This thesis attempts to make a comparative study on the tWo tyPesof the foreign trade EnglisAnhe foreign trade contract and the foreigntrade letter from the tWo aspects of the ling'Uistic and situational aPproach.By analyzing the concrete samples, the thesis aims to find aninterrelationship betWeen the situational prediction and the lingUisticrealization.The thesis is divided into six palls. The first pall makes a briefintroduction about the business situationrtonuntmication. The secondped oullines the theoretical framework conceming the further analysis~---especialIy for register and register predichon. The ford part and thefodri part show the situational (field, tenof, mode) and linguistic(Ietical, synactic and textual level) analysis on the selected samPles ofthe foreign trade contracts and the fOreign trade letters respectiveIy, whilethe fifth part makes a brief comPedson of the tWo tyPes and indicates thelimitation, practical application and suggeshon of the analysis in thefOreign trade leaming, teaching and conununication. The final pall is anaPpendix colltaining 56 authentic samPles----6 fOr the cofltracts(randoInly selected from the 30 sample corpus) and 50 for the Ietters.APwt from the above tWo tyPes, the other vedeties of the foreigntrade langUage have not been further discussed in this thesis due to tiIneand space lindted. The author hopes this thesis will be of some help forthe students, teachers and businessmen in the intemational trade field.
