Content:On the history of modern Chinese literary criticism, Li Jianwu was a distinctive critic. He mainly studied the impressionism criticism and absorbed the quintessence of ancient Chinese literary criticism and established his criticism system. His criticism model, evaluating writers according to their writings, underlay the dissertation on aesthetic humanity, by which the critic analysed writings and discovered writers' personalities. Actually, he strived for the meeting of two spirits. Consequently, criticism is essentially identification. However, the critic held on to his own views when his opinions and writers' were inconsistent. For this reason, a text was open to various interpretations and an inkling of hermeneutic can be seen. Moreover, Li Jianwu laid particular stress on appreciation and his commentaries were the result of exploring and creating beauties. But, as a beneficial remedy of his criticism character, Li Jianwu always resorted to picking holes of writings. As a whole, Li Jianwu's literary criticism was a successful case which was of great modern significance. Being under the circumstance of the association of various literary theories, he achieved mastery through a comprehensive study of Chinese and foreign literary theories. In addition, a modern spirit of communication and dialogism can be found in his criticism practice, which will contribute undoubtedly to the establishment and development of modern Chinese literary theory.
