With the deepening of linguistic study and the extensive application of the linguistic theories, the linguistics related subject study is receiving increasing attention by linguists. Linguists shift their focus of concern to the cross subjects studies, and expect to improve the practical and inspiring value of the linguistic studyIn this thesis, I venture to use both economic and linguistic theories to explain a language phenomenon-language competition. Two principle economic theories used in the thesis are: Language as a Human Capital and Network Externalities. Besides the economic theories, several theories of linguistics, which also serve for the thesis as well as their economic counterpart, will be reviewedVarious factors, including the political, military, and economic, can exert influence on language competition, and sometimes they interact. Economic power analysis to language competition in the foreign language learning and teaching market is of major concentration in this thesis. It should be pointed that here we analyze from the perspective of economy, which is not to deny the importance of other factors.The research has its implication to the real life Now we are in an era of new economy, in which, culture industry is about to be a crucial factor of the economic increase. And at the same time, the focus of consuming pattern in the era of new economy will transform from the traditional pattern-material consumption to a novel pattern-cultural consumption. In this sense, the new economy provides an opportunity for Chinese economic increaseToday, with the rapid economic growth rate and the winning of membership of WTO, China and its language are receiving increasing attention in the foreign language learning and teaching market. According to the estimate given by an expert, by the end of 2010, the income brought by the Chinese-related industry will have reached 100 billion R.MB Therefore, it is quite necessary to promote the popularity of Chinese language in the foreign language learning and teaching market, and develop the language related industry, so as to enhance the economic power of China.
