This essay argues that, in Dai Wangshu' s poems, there is a phenominum of modern quality, which is more a reform of poetry' s deep structure than a concept of time and which exists not only in expressive style but also in spiritual quality, depth of thoughts and yalue preference of feelings. As a modern poet in 1930s, Dai Wangshu, who was good at blending skills of Chinese poetry, built up his unique world of poetry and, above all, an invaluable modern quality of poems, thus pushing forward the development of Chinese modern poetry. Although this modern quality, with some distinct incomplete points, is far from being complete and pure , it is a true historical form as well as an unavoidable phenominum at the primary stage of modern poems. Dai' s poems, from both positive and negative respects, make us understand how to move the dovelopment of Chinese modern poems with great speed and to promote the modern quality of them. The writer tries hard to analyze, this phenominum with a specific acknowledgement and objective description. The essay consists of six parts.I . Preface : a brief outline of the development of modernism both in China and in the West and an explanation of the basic contents of modern quality.II. Historical status : an analysis both chorconological and synchronic of Dai' s status in and contribution to Chinese modern poetry.III. Building-up of modern quality : an analysis of the causes of sadness and the sense of desolation in the changes of the poet's feeling s and skills, the formation of symbolization and the pursuit of musical beauty whichtogethen form main connotation of Dai' s modern quality.IV. Limits and incomplete points, in modern quality : an analysis of religious spirits, a lack of epic quality and week psychology in literary men which, all together, make the biggest difference and the distinction of nature between Dai' s poems and those of modernist poets.V. Return to classical school : a return to the opposite side of the modern; the influence of the traditional culture on Dai in the respeets of image and emotion, which makes him give up his persistence to and pursuit of modern, and thus makes classical nature rise to the main beauty symbol of a modern poet.VI. Concusion: a brief conclusion of the characteristics and the causes of the limits in Dai' s poems.
