Shi noun is one of noun, opposite to the noun indicating the name material, indicates the name of thing. For the time being, few scholars have studied on shi noun according to data collected. How to study the motivation and accumulation of Chinese words in regard to shi noun deserves us to take further steps. In view of such deficiency, the writer selected shi noun of Li Ji as the study subject. Professor Ning Wang acclaimed that the accumulation of Chinese words had undergone three stages: origin, derivation and compound. In the stage of derivation, the combinative rule of phoneme and meaning is that, the similar phoneme, the similar meaning. She hold that Zhou and Qin Dynasties are the derivative peak of Chinese words. So the writer select Li Ji compiled in the Warring States Period as the study subject. The essay is composed of seven parts. Preface. Its main contents include two aspects. The first, present the aim and assignment of the study. The second, introduce the theories and the concrete nanlytic method in studies. Chapter 1, the hand-down and annotation of Li Ji and judgement of the time when it was compiled. The second, to summarize the document studied during each dynasty and explain the adopted editions. Chapter 2, the definition of shi noun. Its main contents include two points. The first, for it relates directly to the choice of materials, the writer gives the shi noun a distinct definition. The second, to establish a meaning criterion of shi noun: First, it must relevant to things. Second, it is abstract. Chapter 3, the classification of shi noun of Li Ji. It contains two points. First, classify shi noun under five types. Second, describe the five types of shi noun and the subsections. Chapter 4, investigation on part motivation of shi noun. Chinese words possess shallow and deep motivation meanings. The latter underlies the former. This chapter examine and verify the motivation of forty-five shi noun. Chapte 5, based on the former motivation, the writer analyze the rules of combination of phoneme and meaning, One is a word's phoneme can convey its meaning, the other is that the same meaning dues to the same motivation. In concluding remarks, the writer point out some deficiency in the study of shi noun that deserves further concern.
