Discrepancies In Chinese And Western Thinking Modes: Basic Reason For Chinglish

With the rapid development of society and technology, the international contacts between different peoples facilitate the cultural and economic exchange, in which translation, an inter-lingual and intercultural communicative activity, takes on considerably outstanding significance. As proved by practice, translation cannot be viewed merely as a linguistic undertaking, but calls for the transformation of thinking modes to a larger extent. If a translator would tend to stick to word-for-word translation due to his native thinking mode, information delivery couldn't be reliably ensured. Although different nations share more or less similar cultural aspects, the cultural differences, especially the discrepancies in the Chinese and Western thinking modes, frequently pose obstacles to Chinese-to-English translation between the SL and TL. Chinglish, speech or writing in English that shows the interference of the Chinese thinking mode, has become the major barrier hi Chinese-to-English translation. Therefore, a systematic discussion on its manifestations, causes and ways of minimizing or eliminating Chinglish, will greatly improve the quality of translation from Chinese to English, thereby facilitating intercultural communication.Nowadays, China plays an increasingly important role in international affairs. The multitudinous communication and cooperation between China and other countries have challenged the translators to ainternational affairs. But basically on account of the discrepancies in the thinking modes between Chinese and English-speaking natives, Chinglish has now become a major translation barrier that hinders people from understanding each other properly. At present, it has affected almost every respect of international communication in China. In future, Chinglish may bring about more problems in the translation from Chinese to English with the further expansion of intercultural communication if it remains unheeded. This thesis is an attempt to explore the main cause and manifestations of Chinglish.This thesis consists of four chapters. Chapter one is a brief preview of Chinglish with its definition and distinctions from China English, Creole, pidgin and varieties of English! Chapter Two offers various manifestations in four ranks. Chapter Three fully analyzes the basic reason for the existence of Chinglish ?the discrepancies in Chinese and Western thinking modes. Chapter Four provides practical solutions to Chinglish in light of the basic reason for it.
