The thesis aims to explore the effect of course material's on students' learning strategy preferences by comparing 3 groups of different textbook users. Statistics from the research show that there are 11 strategies which are significantly more frequently used by New College English users than College English users and 21st Century English users. The 11 learning strategies are grouped into 4 categories for further analysis: 1) focusing on the integration of linguistic skills and knowledge, 2) taking advantage of the development of other skills while improving productive skills, 3) using comprehension strategies in reading, and 4) using more vocabulary strategies in developing language skills. Then, 4 textbook-related reasons are analyzed: 1) the principle of integrated teaching, 2) the topic-based approach, 3) interactive model in reading, and 4) vocabulary learning exploration. Finally, the implication of this study is briefly discussed.
