Novels by Mao Dun select consciously great subject matters which reflect the trend of the times. He hopes his novels can contain broad historical contents, and embody distinctly the traits of the times. So novels by Mao Dun possess the characteristics of epic. If his novels are arranged according to the times which reflect, then thirty years' turbulent society reality and great historical waves from the age of May 4th to the eve of the victory liberation war in China are put on display.
