Research On The Stylistic Rules That Involved In Duan Yucai's Work That Discussed The Radicals Of Shuowen

Shuowenjiezi (shorten as Shuowen below) was written by Xu Shen the famous master of Jingxue and as well as novelist, and was finished in year 12 Yongyuan of Emperor He of East-nan Dynasty (100 AD). Shuowen is the first book analyzing the forming of Chinese character and its pronunciation based on Qing-Dynasty-character-system following the theory of liushu in our whole history. The classical dictionary on wording describes the original meaning of each character. It is also the foundation of scientific philology and Linguistics of the document. The book includes 9353 main characters titled by 540 radicals.Stylistic rules are the style of a work, including the format of the work, the system of guiding principle and the detailed rules of the content. Any work has its stylistic rules from the very day it is done. For us, when reading any works, we should make clear its stylistic rules before we can grasp its basically meaning.The work Shuowen has no note on the use with it due to its ancient time. It is only in the surface of the Shuowen can we find some limited explanations on the number the work includes and explains, the including number of radicals, e. g. But as far as the explanation illustration, the pronunciation is concerned, there involves little. This will set many obstacles to us to study and research on it.Shuowen has received much concern from scholar of all dynasties since the day it was done. The earliest scholars such as Xu Kai "Cannot catch all the details of the illustrations Shuzhong had given. " They concentrate their more attention on the style of calligraphy, its meaning and the theory of liushu than the stylistic rules. It was until Qing Dynasty when it came theday of Shuowen, the scholars began to set their aims on the research of the stylistic rules of Shuowen. And it was Duan Yucai who first researched the main purpose and the stylistic rules of Shuowen systemically in his book.Duan Yucai was from Jiangsu province. Same with Xu Shen, Duan was a famous scholar on the research of Jingxue as well as a novelist.He had written the annotation of Shuowen, maoshiguxunzhuan etc. The biggest achievement Duan had reached was his work the annotation of Shuowen. The work was planned and begun in year 1780, when Duan was forty-six and was finished in year 1808. The whole process lasted as long as nearly 30 years.The annotation of Shuowen made progress on the respects below: 1. Made clear the stylistic rules; 2. Studied the relationship between the pronunciation and the acceptation of an character. 3. Compared thesaurus. 4. Paid attention to the research on acceptation system. 5. Studied with novelty and modified and corrected the Shuowen. But for reason that Wang Yun one of the four-masters of Shuowen made the most thorough and detailed dissertation on Shuowen in his book Shuowenshili which was regarded as the greatest master in this field, Duan' s work was faded. Although there were quite a few scholars dabbled in this field, but few of them would turn to Duan' s works special on the stylistic rules and developed an article based on it. But in fact we cannot ignore Duan' s research on the stylistic rules on Shuowen. Just as Wang himself had said: "Duan' s thoughts and arguments in book are basically good, and his argument on general rule has not been discussed before. " This showed his high estimate over Duan' s works.When doing his research Duan collected materials on stylistic widely first and made one full script, and made detailed illuminations on Shuowen in the form of illustration, what illustrated much to the later readers and scholars.This article mainly describes the stylistic rules of Shuowen that was concerned when Duan made illustration on the book. Statistic shows there add up to 103 times that Duan had mentioned the stylistic rules in his book in the description of radicals.
