A Study On Kou Radical In Shuowen

Shuowenjiezi is the first philology work in China, is also the first dictionary in thehistory of Chinese, focused on analysing grapheme, explaining the meanings andidentifying character pronunciation. It has an important value in the study of ancientphilology, ancient character and critical interpretation of ancient texts. Some literaturestake it into serious account. Some study its style, and some study its radicals. In Shuowenspecial study, the words of kou radical still lack in-depth research at present. In this paper,we use kou radical in Daxuben as research object. I hope to make a comprehensive andsystemic study for the future study in version review, inspection of glyph, emendation ofliteral meaning, and the relationship between kou radical and the other radicals.In order to complete the kou radical research, this paper will be divided into fourchapters:Chapter one is about version review. Firstly, It will mainly to comparing Daxubenwith the other versions that include Xiaoxuben, Duanzhu, Yinyi, Yulan and Wenxuan toshow the differences between different versions. And then, we account for differentsitutations.Chapter two is about the inspection of glyph. Firstly, according to comparing oracle,jinwen, and jianbo words that include chu and qin words with characters in Daxuben tofind wrong characters. And then, we can use the word table to reveal the complete pictureof kou radical.Chapter three is about the emendation of literal meaning. The article use the newlyunearthed ancient material and oracle, jinwen etc documents to search out the originalword. This chapter will find words that its meaning is not the original meaning: theextended meaning take the place of original meaning, the guise of righteousness take theplace of the original meaning, and the wrong meaning take the place of the originalmeaning.Chapter four is discussing about the relationship between kou radical and the otherradicals. Firstly, many of kou words should be classified as kou radical. And then, many kou words should not be classified as the kou radical. Finally, some words both can beclassified as the kou and the other radical.
