This thesis points out the general problems existing in college English teaching, particularly in Intensive Reading teaching of the New College English Book, studies the role of teacher in this inefficient teaching process and proposes a new approach -dynamic approach to encourage the teacher to shift his or her role of teaching in order to cultivate the learner's learning potential and autonomy. The new approach recognizes that the acquisition of receptive and productive knowledge of language must involve the learning of communicative properties as well as the linguistic forms. On the ground of a general review of the historical development, of the principles, teacher and student roles in Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) and its practices around the world, the new approach, with its term sources, its techniques and strategies, takes in some research result of interactive learning in Second Language Acquisition (SLA), of the Roesenmal Effect in Psychology, of the cultural teaching in sociolinguistics, aims to set up a teaching pattern in which student's communicative ability is strongly emphasized through various attempts such as learning-experience transforming, making learning relate to life, text revising, story telling, culture involving etc. This thesis intends to help college English teachers adapt themselves to the changing situation of the English class and to encourage learners to involve their motivation and experience actively in learning. The ultimate purpose of this thesis is to facilitate learners to acquire integrated language skills as well as communicative ability. The experimental and applicable considerations of this new approach are discussed in detail in the thesis. It is expected that the new approach will be somewhat beneficial to college English teaching.
