General self-efficacy refers to a global confidence in one's coping ability across a wide range of demanding or novel situations. As a generalized self-efficacy belief, it can predict individual activities under various situations and affect his mental health. So far, researches have concentrated more on some special fields than on general self-efficacy. Therefore a study on the relationship between general self-efficacy and coping styles as well as mental health of university students is not only helpful for enriching the theoretical study on general self-efficacy, but also of great practical significance in practice to improve university students' mental health.Based on the concept, assessment scales and the current research situations about general self-efficacy, the paper revises the General Self-Efficacy Scale of foreign country in the light of our culture, makes a primary investigation on Chinese university students' general self-efficacy, and explores the relationship between general self-efficacy and coping styles as well as mental health. The conclusions drawn from this study are as follows:1. The revised General Self-Efficacy Scale consists of one dimension and has good reliability and validity.2. The total level of university students' general self-efficacy is much higher, but some students' are lower than ones at average level. There exists some significant difference between different genders. Male students' general self-efficacy is higher than that of female students.3. General self-efficacy correlates with coping styles significantly. It relates positively to solving problem and seeking support, but negatively to self-accusation, fantasy and withdrawal. General self-efficacy can predict these five coping styles to a certain degree.4. General self-efficacy is significantly related to mental health. It is not only negatively correlated with depression, anxiety and the general level of mental health, but also can predict them.5. University students' general self-efficacy and coping styles play an important role in predicting their mental health. General self-efficacy has a main effect on mental health by coping styles, and coping styles can affect mental health by general self-efficacy.According to the results, two pieces of advice were proposed:1. Improving university students' general self-efficacy to enhance their self-confidence.2. Developing university students' active coping styles to handle problems well.
