Kafka and LuXun lived almost in the same time. With the development of the industry, Writers cast a new light on the literature of the time both in the west and the east. In the west, the old values had been broken down. The civilization went against human beings. In this background, the literature of modernism came out, many authors of modernism sprang up, one of whom was Kafka. In China, one of the representatives of modernism was LuXun, who was greatly influenced by the west. Because of similar experiences and temperament, the works of Kafka and LuXun were worth comparing with each other. In this dissertation the author tries to obtain an insight into the works of LuXun and Kafka on the theme of death, modern humanitarianism and irony.Many protagonists in the works of Kafka ended up with death, from which, they seemed to have sought for the ultimate console. Kafka was indulged in death, from which he found the significance and values of life. LuXun also obtained an insight into death. In his eyes, death meant not only the death of body, but also the death of soul. He tried to reveal the reality of the country and wake up the sleeping people.The works of LuXun and Kafka were full of humanitarianism. Kafka believed that humans must live a human life. LuXun revealed a society in which human beings were treated like animals and old system had deprived human beings of their elementary material things and blasphemed the spirit as humans. So he called on people to destroy the old system.Irony was widely used in the works of Kafka and LuXun. In this dissertation the author tries to discuss the similarities and differences of irony used by Kafka and LuXun.Kafka and LuXun were both skeptics. Doubts made Kafka turn to himself and soberly criticize the society. But LuXun protested against the reality and became a courageous soldier. Adversities Kafka and LuXun experienced all their lives made them become the representatives of the great writers with conscience in the 20th century.
