This thesis studies the structure of the verb tell(gaosu) group from a cognitive perspective. Verbs play an important role in language communication in our daily life. It is a big and complex set and is considered as the central part in a sentence. And verb can affect the syntax and semantic of a sentence. Wierzbicka classified verbs in her own and distinctive point of view in her book English speech act verbs: A Semantic dictionary . In her book, tell has several sub-sets. Frame semantics, a branch of the cognitive linguistics, is used to study the semantic structure of tell group here. Frame semantics is a branch of Fillmore's case grammar and has developed with its own characteristics. In recent years modern linguistics have given more and more effect on mandarin study. Many Chinese mandarin grammar, study methods and some of the grammar books have more or less taken some thoughts and ideas from modern west linguistics. Some of these theories have been used to pay special attention to the usage of verbs. Nowadays most of the mandarin linguists study verbs with valence theory, which is produced by Tesniere. In this thesis I will discuss and analyze mandaringaosu group with this theory'.Frame semantics is one element of case grammar, which is believed to share the notion of verb-centrality with valence grammar. So it isnatural that I study verb with these two theories. In this thesis the integration of case grammar and valence theory is suggested. It is suggested that the approach introduced in this thesis serve as a common one for us in the analysis of other verbs in English and Chinese. Our study is of some significance towards verb study in English and Chinese. In chapter four I point out that verb is a complex and important word class. In order to analyze it more precisely this thesis may be of importance. This thesis analyzes some language facts with some theories successfully.
