College English Teaching will make some big reform, and college students will nolonger learn " mute and dumb oral English".China Ministry of Education declared an important reform at the end of the year 2003. It says: the trial on college English teaching will be launch in February, 2004.It will alter the present teaching program, convert the reading comprehension-oriented to listening and speaking-oriented, therefore improve the students' overall comprehensive application competence and reform the negative model of teacher-controlled class.There exist some problems in oral English class in China today, such as: "dumb English" and "low efficiency", large classes, boring and dull class environment, and theshortage of affective communication between the teacher and students.It is very common with our students to greet each other, but after talking about the weather, they fail to express anything, to talk about a serious topic and communicate with others.The emergence of the above problems shows that there is a big disadvantage existing in our English teaching, that is, the teacher just teach English as language structure, and the result is that the students neither learn the knowledge of the language nor the ideas of the language. At the same time, especially in oral English teaching, we do not notice the personal characteristics of the most Chinese students such as, reserved, timid and constrained. Hence, the students will have a strong ability of dealing with examinations, but have a poor competence of dealing with communication with others.This paper, based on the communicative approach combined with the interactive techniques, sets out to find and to improve the following three problems in the College English class :1. How to create a positive environment by teachers at the beginning of the class?2. How to initiate interaction in the oral class?3. How to deal with a large class?The origins of Communicative Language Teaching or Communicative Approach are to be found in the changes in the language teaching tradition in Britain dating from the late 1960s. Many linguists began to view language not only in terms of structures, but also the communicative functions that it performs.The basis of CA is that language is asked for communication, and that learning a language is to learn to communicate.The striking characteristics of CA are: 1. language teaching is to meet the requirement of each individual student and applying various techniques flexibly to improve their communicative ability. 2. Learning activities are consequently selected according to how well they engage the learner in meaningful and authentic language use. The primary units of language are not only its grammatical and structural features, but categories of functional and communicative meanings as exemplified in discourse. Communicative competence is the ability to use the linguistic system effectively and appropriately. Fluency and acceptable language are the primary goal.However, oral class has its own special features: 1. Students are butterflies in their stomach. They are eager to gaining a new skill. On the other hand, they are worried to be failed. 2. It has two communicative environments: one is that the students have to communicate with the foreign culture, and another is that the students use the foreign culture to communicate with the teacher and each other. In oral class, mostly, the students are under a circumstance of "intercourse, communication and interaction", through many specific activities to speak, practice, stimulate and perform English so as to gain English knowledge and communicative competence.The first thing to consider in oral English teaching is to create a relaxing atmosphere. That is, students will use language incorrectly and inappropriately, they feel nervous and are afraid of losing face.The gist of the interaction language teaching is : language teaching sets up the basis for communication of information and affection between the teacher and the students.
