The vicissitude of China's Documentary in the 1990s is an important transformation of its self-evolution. This transformation, compared with the development of China's Documentary in the past 70 years, has raised to a new level, either on the change of cultural formation and creation ideology, or on understanding and mastering the law of creating TV Documentary, or on the selection of subjects, application of methods and technique and the standard of technology creation. During the whole 1990s, the progress of China's Documentary is unprecedented. However, in the mid and late 90s, its decline in the propagating market is also conspicuous, which may result from not only external cultural formation, but also internal logic of China's Documentary's self-evolution.In this paper, the author adopts positive study method and document analysis method to sort out extensively the external and internal factors determining the success and failure of China's Documentary in the 90s;to grasp in general the development ideas of China's Documentary in the 90s, thus to offer a panorama for China's Documentary during these ten years. Furthermore, the author tries to put forward an alternative plan for a much greater development of China's Documentary in the new century. Namely, to blaze a new trail of pluralization of ideology, subject selection and style etc.
