The appearance of the folk-orientation is one of the main features in novel writing in the 1990's. There has been a whole series of literature on the novel writing and the folk-orientation of the 90's, but this article is to lay out the overall situation of the folk-orientation of China's novel creation in the 90's, from a brand-new point of view of the analysis on the features of a peculiar writer-Mr. You Feng-wei, including its concept, developing mode, reasons for appearance, characteristics, meaningfulness, existence and future aspects. This is a new standpoint and field, which puts forth complete studies and research into the phenomenon of folk-orientation, exerts criticism on the deficiencies in the sophisticated trend of novel writing in the 90's in China and comes to a clear-bound summary of the folksy literature in that period. It is the author's wish that it will give light to the studies of present-day literary creations. This article first of all determines the complicated connotation and the multi-layer contents included in the sense of folk-orientation, giving summaries and definitions and then organizes analyses into the four aspects of the history and present situations, the intellectuals, the freedom and the theme of love vs death in the creation of folk-oriented literature. In the history and present situations, this article reveals the personal inner world that is suppressed and twisted by the main stream from the view-point of "root-seeking" of folk-oriented novels and by means of authors pondering over the history and folks reflecting on the modern society. "China: 1957" is a spiritual recording of the "57's Chinese". It is the feature of Mr. You Feng-wei's works to follow and question the heroes in the historical situations. He simply categorizes the intellectuals in the deep layer of their humanity and mental world into two kinds, in his depiction of the society and the changes of their standpoints, those who can hold their inner world and those who can not. He states the importance of keeping a stable and independent power of the inner world through the analysis on the intellectuals in "China: 1957": a true and outstanding folk author is one who will hold on to his human value and keep the balance with his inner world. In the freedom of folk-oriented novels, what is stressed is the freedom originated from the inner heart, which is embodied in the extreme development of the authors' personality: they have to hold against the outer lure of "money" and "power", and what's more the pressure from their soul, to break through the ego. In the theme of love vs death, his works depict the "civilized love" that is not suppressed and found in the folk literature, through the entangled theme of love and death: the combination with death further upgrades love, giving a tragic beauty to his works. What is emphasized in this article is the importance of the "independent and profound theme of folk-oriented literature".QingLian Li(Chinese modern literature) Directed by Professor Haibo Zhou...
