On The Culture Identity Between Chinese And Western In Ang's Movies

Ang Lee, Chinese Director of the time, is the only Chinese who was awarded the Best Foreign Film of Oscar. Since 1991, he has shot eight films, including "Pushing Hand", "Wedding", "At Drink Man Woman", "Sense and Sensibility", "Ice Storm", "Ride with Devil", "Crouching Tiger and Hidden Dragon", "Hulk". He, famous all over world, disposed of both Chinese and Western theme well, gained the success in American market. This thesis takes Ang Lee's movie as a studied object, indicates his movies has the character of Chinese and Western Culture Identity. With methods of Film theory and Cultural Studies, it focuses on the "Culture Identity", a viewpoint to analyze the theme of Family, and the tokens of Chinese and Western Culture. Connecting with Lee's cultural background and cultural experience, it explores why and how Lee reaches the identification between Chinese and Western culture.This thesis is divided to four parts: Chapter One: the Place where Chinese culture and Western Culture Meet: Family. To discuss why Family is the theme of Lee's movies, we study the impact between individual and Family, the deconstruction and reconstruction of Family, and the cultural meaning of Family in his films. The reason is Chinese traditional culture affection and living respects he has. Chapter two: Cultural Equality, Cultural Diversity And Culture Identity. By the research on Lee's image representations to Chinese and western culture, we conclude that he thinks culture difference is cultural inbeing and cultural charm, the relationship of cultures is equal. With compromise, he solutes the cultural conflict and reaches the culture identity. Chapter three: The Narrative Strategy of Culture Entering. Lee combines the type movie with Chinese aesthetic spirit. That allows the audiences could hurdle the cultural obstruction, comprehend and accept the other culture. Chapter four: Ang Lee's Multiple Culture Identity and Culture Stand. After analyzing the Taiwan culture and Lee's experience of living, we find it is his Mulriple Culture Identity cause he has intricate culture stand. Therefore, he insistscultural diversity, seeks the conversation and identity between cultures with compromise.
