The main purpose of this thesis is to research into the issues of cultural loss and its compensation in Chinese-English and English-Chinese translation, and the principles that guide the cultural compensation. This thesis is roughly divided into three parts. The first part is an introduction. The second part includes four chapters. Chapter 1 briefly discusses the relationship between culture and translation, revealing that translation studies have taken a cultural turn. Then the thesis maintains that Schleiermacher Model, is of great importance in introducing another culture to the foreign readers. In chapter 2, the thesis mainly deals with cultural loss. After illustrating various cultural elements, the author introduces loss of meaning and distortion of meaning in the process of cultural transfer.Chapter 3 mainly discusses some of the compensation methods that are popular among translators as well as the evaluation of these methods. As a mediator of different cultures, the translator should resort to different ways of cultural compensation to keep the loss to a minimum so as to make the target reader appreciate the alien culture to the same extent as the source reader. In chapter 4, the author emphasizes that on choosing compensation methods, translator should consider two factors, receptor and cultural conflict and observe two principles, faithfulness and effectiveness. At last the translator's role is emphasized. The last part is a conclusion, which winds up the whole thesis and hopes to rouse the translator's cross-cultural awareness in playing the role of bi-cultural mediator.
