An Analysis Of Variables In Cultural Compensation

The thesis intends to explore one aspect of compensation research: the cultural compensation study. The focus of cultural compensation study is cultivated and the variables concerning about cultural compensation are proposed and analyzed in the study.Compensation study comes into being with the existence of the loss in translation. However, compensation research does not get enough attention of the translation scholars. Based on the Steiner's development of compensatory study, compensation happens due to the loss in translation. The thesis presents the cultural factors which are easy to cause the cultural loss in translation. Since culture is characterized by the innate loss in translation, cultural compensation deserves more attention in compensation study. In addition, cultural compensation study is of importance in compensation research due to the close relationship between culture and language. It is a further research into the cultural compensation study, in which the focus and the significance of the study is investigated. By analyzing the different levels of the compensation for the cultural loss in translation, the emphasis of the study is to make an appropriate compensation in translation. The research of cultural compensation study intends to be discussed under a macro-context. Therefore, the degree of cultural compensation is decided not only by the cultural loss, but also by many other factors. The discussion of the focus of cultural compensation study serves as a premise to carry out the research of the variables in the study. The translator is the most active element in translation so that the variables are classified by regarding the translator as the reference into two categories: subjectivities and objectivities of the translator. The present study analyzes the influence of these variables in the process of translation with examples and also gives the priority to the translator's experiences and his or her cultural background in cultural compensation.The cultural compensation study is an enrichment to the compensation research. As the focus of the study, an appropriate cultural compensation serves as a goal for the translators in translation. The analysis of variables in the study is both instructive for translation research and translation practice.
